EASY TO OWN AND OPERATE Evinrude E-TEC outboards require no scheduled dealer maintenance - that's right, zero - for the first three years or 300 hours of normal recreational use. Not even gear case lube. You'll never have to change the oil or the oil filter, which can cost several hundred dollars each year for other technologies.

Evinrude E-TEC uses up to 75% less than typical 2-stroke carbureted engines and up to 50% less oil than competitive direct injection engines (when run with Evinrude/Johnson XD 100T oil with optional dealer programming of the Engine Management Module, versus normal TCW3 oil). And you'll use 30% less oil compared to a 4-stroke with a typical maintenance schedule under normal operating conditions.

CLEANER & QUIETER. With a fully stratified combustion system, Evinrude E-TEC outboards are designed to comply with 2006 EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) as well as tough 2006 EU (European Union) standards well into the future. E-TEC even meets the ultra-low 2008 CARB (California Air Resource Board) 3-Star emissions rating. For you, it simply means a cleaner boating environment: no smoke and dramatically lower carbon monoxide emissions.

With the E-TEC system, fuel is injected twice as fast as traditional direct injection engines and unburned fuel never reaches the exhaust port. This means the fuel charge never escapes the combustion chamber as it is burned and turned into pure power. E-TEC also senses when to change fuel delivery into the chamber, depending on engine needs, resulting in precision fuel flow and extreme fuel efficiency.  The sealed fuel system also minimizes evaporative emissions. And finally, no more pre-mixing fuel and oil thanks to the E-TEC auto-lube oiling system.

And then there's the E-TEC signature sound. The exclusive E-TEC idle air bypass circuit, acoustically tuned air intake and exhaust silencers and state of the art acoustic foam lining combine for an incredibly quiet engine that hums like nothing else on the water.

Power & Performance. With a fully stratified combustion system, Evinrude E-TEC offers unsurpassed fuel economy, especially at low speeds. At higher speeds, the Engine Management Module (EMM), making up to 8 million calculations per second, delivers precisely the right amount of fuel directly into the combustion chamber for every load and condition.
 
The lightweight design of the Evinrude E-TEC increases performance and boat handling, while its large displacement provides more horsepower and torque.  This combination of light weight and high torque makes E-TEC accelerate faster and achieve higher top speeds than any other outboard engine in its class.
When you consider the fact that the 2-stroke Evinrude E-TEC produces a power stroke every revolution and it doesn't have the added complexity of  belts, camshafts, valves, timing chains and oil pumps that add weight and rob power and torque it's easy to understand why 2>4.

When we began developing Evinrude E-TEC, we listened closely to what customers, dealers, boat builders and suppliers had to say.  We discovered the core, underlying requirements that boaters have for outboard engines and understood them in a way that no other manufacturer had yet demonstrated. Those needs formed the core of our mission.

Boaters told us they want:

  • to use their boats, not tinker with them.
  • their outboard engines to start the first time, every time.
  • an engine that doesn't spend days - or weeks - each year at the dealer, waiting for service.
  • an engine that doesn't cost hundreds of dollars for "routine maintenance."

In short, they wanted a powerful, efficient, clean and quiet outboard engine that doesn't require a lot of hassle, time or money to own and operate.

Sound familiar?  It's probably what you want in an outboard engine.  But until now, engine companies said you couldn't have it all; that there were tradeoffs. We decided we would develop an engine that didn't require you to make compromises.

And so began the process of developing the technology to meet the needs of today's and tomorrow's boater.




 

The technology of Evinrude E-TEC is far more than an update of today's direct injection technology.  Rather, it pulls from some of the best marine, automotive, and aerospace technologies, and applies them in ways that change the face of the outboard engine.  In addition, some key structural components are borrowed from much larger engines, providing an amazing margin of durability, while holding down costs.

The "brain" of every E-TEC engine is its Engine Management Module (EMM), which can perform more than 8 million calculations every second.  In fact, an E-TEC has been described as a very simple engine controlled by an extremely powerful computer.

It automatically sets timing.  It measures temperatures throughout the engine, as well as ambient air temperature and barometric pressure.

The spark plugs feature double platinum tips, and provide a short spark at high RPM or a long spark start-up and idle - both intensities controlled by the EMM. 

How does the E-TEC manage no break-in period?  First, the cylinder bores are boron nitride-honed which exposes porosity in the cylinder alloy which actually retains a microscopic layer of oil to decrease initial wear.  The EMM monitors the initial run time, adjusting oil delivery as required.

BRP also precision machines all parts to ensure perfect "mating."  And during the life of the E-TEC, the exclusive E-Start system provides instantaneous starting, as direct light combustion eliminates the fuel wet-down period.

The engine fires so quickly (within a single revolution), that it startles some!  The EMM intensifies spark during cranking, and in the rope-start version, the injection system is independent of the battery, as it is magneto driven.

Evinrude E-TEC also allows for easy at-home customer winterization program.  Attach a garden hose, follow the simple instructions in the owners manual, and in a few minutes, you're ready for winter - no expensive dealer trip necessary!

The sealed fuel system minimizes oxidation during long-term storage, and there is no battery drain in the key-off mode.  The "Sure-Dry" Air Intake System also prevents engine damage caused by water intrusion.

To ensure that the high-demands of quality were met, the Evinrude E-TEC was put through 30,000+ hours of testing, including field-testing and full factory testing.

Saltwater boaters are a breed apart, willing to stand up to some of the harshest conditions the planet can produce. Of course, they need equipment that's as durable as they are. Evinrude E-TEC Saltwater Editions fit the bill with virtually indestructible stainless steel parts and extensive DeepGuard corrosion protection.

Saltwater Editions use a stainless steel steering tube, steering arm, pivot shaft, drive shaft, prop shaft and fasteners.
